Physicians

Physicians are health care providers who have extensive education and training and who are licensed to practice medicine. Physicians often choose to specialize in areas, such as cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, among other specialties. Twenty-four medical specialties are recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Physicians may be sued for various errors and omissions, such as:

  • Failure to diagnose, delay of diagnosis, or misdiagnosis of a disease
  • Failure to obtain the patient’s adequately informed consent for the proposed surgery or treatment
  • Improper treatment or procedures
  • Medications errors – for example, a physician could be liable if the physician writes a prescription for an incorrect dosage, and a pharmacist could be liable for errors made in the actual dispensing of the medicine

surgeons

Surgeons are educated and trained in performing surgical procedures and may specialized in different areas of medicine, such as neurological surgery, plastic surgery, or orthopedic surgery.

Numerous circumstances may arise related to surgery that can lead to allegations of negligence, such:

  • Failure to obtain a patient’s adequately informed consent
  • Performance of the wrong surgical procedure
  • Incorrect surgical technique
  • Injury to adjacent organs during surgical procedures
  • Surgery on wrong organ or body part
  • Delayed or unnecessary surgery
